Remodeling Your Home? The Smart Technology Upgrades Worth Planning For

Why Timing Is Everything When Integrating Technology Into Your Remodel

If you’ve ever lived through a home remodel, you know it’s a whirlwind of decisions. You’re picking out marble slabs and debating paint swatches. You’re figuring out where the new kitchen island should sit. It’s easy to get caught up in the aesthetics, but there’s a layer beneath the surface that’s just as critical to your daily comfort: the technology.

We often tell our clients in Oklahoma City that a remodel is the single best time to future-proof your home. It’s the walls-open phase where we can do the heavy lifting that saves you from headaches (and drywall repairs) down the road. You don’t need every flashy gadget on day one, but you do need the right foundation for a seamless smart home experience

Here’s how to prioritize your smart technology upgrades during a renovation so your home feels as smart as it looks.

Start with a Robust Network Foundation

We’ve all dealt with that one ‘dead zone’ in the house where the Wi-Fi just gives up. In a luxury home with thick building materials, a standard router won't cut it.

When your walls are open, we can run low-voltage wiring to strategic points for wireless access points and smart home devices. This ensures your network can handle everything from your 4K Netflix streaming in the theater to your video calls in the home office without a stutter. It’s much cheaper to pull wire now than to try to fish it through finished crown molding later.

Plan for Lighting and Shading Early

Lighting is the quickest way to change the ambiance in a room, but the old way of doing things (rows of clunky plastic switches) is dated. With a lighting system like Lutron, we can replace those banks of on/off switches with a single, elegant keypad.

  • Centralized Lighting: Move the bulky dimmers to a mechanical room or closet. All you see on the walls are sleek, customized keypads that can trigger scenes like ‘Dinner,’ ‘Evening,’ or ‘Away.’

  • Motorized Shades: If you want those floor-to-ceiling windows to have motorized drapery or rollers, we need to talk about power now. Hardwiring your shades during a remodel means you never have to worry about changing batteries or seeing a dangling cord.

  • Hidden Audio: If you love music but hate seeing clunky hardware and wires, we can install “invisible" speakers behind the drywall or ceiling. They’re plastered over and painted, so the sound seems to come from the air itself.

The Power of a Unified Control System

The biggest smart home mistake we see at Integrated AV is ‘app fatigue’: having one app for the lights, another for the pool, and a third for the security cameras. During your remodel, plan for a unified platform like Control4.

This acts as the central intelligence of your home. It ties your climate, security, audio, and lighting into one interface. Whether it’s a dedicated touch panel in the kitchen or a remote in the den, everyone in the family should be able to operate the house without a manual.

Expert Tips for a Future-Proof Remodel

  • Run "Smurf Tube": This is a flexible plastic conduit, also known as a ‘flexible EMT.’ If we run this to your main TV locations now, we can easily pull new types of cables through it in ten years when technology inevitably changes.

  • Don't forget the outdoors: If you're doing landscaping work alongside your remodel, let’s run the wires for outdoor audio and lighting before the sod goes down.

  • Think about the "Head-End": Designate a closet or a spot in the mechanical room for your equipment rack. It needs dedicated power and a bit of ventilation to keep your gear cool and reliable.
